Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs.

She spoke firmly to her students.
(The adverb ‘firmly’ modifies the verb ‘spoke’.)

The English teacher was extremely pleased with the results of her students’ English test. (The adverb ‘extremely’ modifies the adjective ‘pleased’.)

The sales assistant served the customers very efficiently.
(The adverb ‘very’ modifies the other adverb ‘efficiently’.)
