Grammar Topic 5 - Past Participle

Grammar – Topic 5

Past Participle

We use verbs in almost all sentences in the English language. That is why it is very important to use the correct form of the verbs.

For example, do you say 'I have wrote', 'I have write' or 'I have written' my English composition?

The correct answer is 'I have written'.
'Written' is the past participle form of the verb 'write'. It is different from the past tense form which is 'wrote'.

Take a look at a list of some common verbs and their past participle form. You might want to print out the list for your own reference. You could also write the past tense form for each of the verbs to check your understanding.

Before you look at the list, read about when you use the past participle form of verbs.

We use the past participle form with:

has/have/had

Examples:
The Korean actor has become famous overnight.
                              (present perfect tense)

I have drawn a picture of my family.
  (present perfect tense)

She had blown all the balloons before the party started.
(past perfect tense)

We can also use the past participle form of the verb with sentences in the passive form.

Examples:
Varnish is placed on the wooden table.
She was given a prize for being the first in class.
Peter had been bitten by a stray dog.
The car was being driven by an elderly gentleman.
