Important Phrases (1)

Here are more important phrases that are often used in the English language. Read the sentences to find out how they are used. 

There will be a couple of posts on this as the list of phrases is much too long for just one post. 


Phrases with ‘at’

1.  He decided to tell his manager that he could not meet the deadline of the project at the risk of incurring his wrath. 

2. She has been training hard from/at the outset and will be able to do well at the competition. 

3. Those who cannot speak German will be at a disadvantage if they apply for a job in Germany. 

4.
At a distance, the house looks like a cottage. 

5. All household items will be sold
at a discount from tomorrow. 

6. Jack was
at a loss when he could not find a new job after he was dismissed from his old job. 

7. The firefighters were expected to be ready to fight a fire
at a moment's notice

8. Owning a condominium in the city comes
at a price

9. "I will study in London at all costs," Jill said stubbornly after her parents told her that they could not afford to send her overseas to study. 

10. She felt at ease with the psychologist and was able to tell her about her problems. 

The opposite of this phrase is to feel ‘ill at ease’ about something. This means to not feel comfortable about something.

11. No specific person is at fault for the team's defeat in the competition. 

12. Ben is a kind boy at heart. I am sure he did not mean to offend you. 

13. The convict who escaped last night is still at large

14. A complimentary bottle of the latest facial wash will be sent to customers at their request

15. At present, English classes are only conducted on Friday and Saturday evenings. 

16. At the height of his success, he was the chief executive director of a shipping company.

17. We are at the mercy of the weather, so the picnic might be cancelled if there is a thunderstorm. 

18. Production in the factory was at a standstill when the owners had a big disagreement.
