Here are more important phrases that are often used in the English language. Read the sentences to find out how they are used. 


Words with ‘out’

1. The committee members were out of ideas and could not think of anymore ideas for the proposal. 

2. Joanne felt out of place at the party as most of the partygoers were much younger than she was. 

3. Jeff is out of practice and could not bowl as well as he used to. 

4. Owning a penthouse is out of reach. We can only afford to stay in a small apartment. 

5. Out of respect for our teacher, we listened attentively when she taught. 

6. She criticised you out of spite as she was envious that you had performed better than she did during the tennis competition. 

7. My father has been out of work for the last three months. 

8. I did not notice anything out of the ordinary when I returned home so I did not know that my house had been burgled. 


Words with ‘in’

1. This dinner is held in honour of the president of the country. 

2. The elderly lady has been living in isolation since her husband passed away. 

3. This electronic gadget is still in its infancy so it still has to be improved before it can be made available to the public. 

4. You will be putting your life in jeopardy when you go diving if you do not abide by the safety regulations  

5. In keeping with tradition, all players in the tournament will have to wear white. 

6. This new policy is in line with the government's call for older workers to remain in the workforce.

7. The statue was built in memory of the late president. 

8. You should not eat too much sweet food. Always eat in moderation

9. How long will each elected president be in office?  

10. This shipyard is no longer in operation. A recreational centre will be built in its place next year. 

11. The king will visit the people in person every month. They look forward to his visits. 

12. Since the steak is no longer available, would you like fish and chips in place of the steak? 

13. The people in this village have been living in poverty since the drought last year. 

15. She practised every day in preparation for her concert. 

16. The principal spoke to the bullies in private before asking to see their parents. 

17. The food stall in question was the one that was suspended for a week because of unhygienic practices. 

18. Employees who have worked for more than ten years in the company will be presented with a gift in recognition of their contribution to the company.
